This fabric is made from cotton moleskin, woven with the weft yarns at the highest possible density. It is thoroughly washed to create a slightly brushed surface. The dyeing process begins with Indian indigo, prized for its exceptional purity and long-standing tradition. Skilled artisans carefully repeat the dyeing and washing processes many times to achieve a deep, intensely rich indigo blue. This is followed by dark mud dyeing using iron-rich mud from the Kyushu region. The combination of indigo and mud dyeing creates a richly nuanced color with remarkable depth, known as “Doro-Ai-zome” (mud and indigo dyeing). This highly labor-intensive natural dyeing process involves repeated cycles of careful dyeing and washing, all carried out by skilled artisans.
